Getting into Crafts and Hobbies

Hello, my name is Damian and I live in Brisbane, Australia. I was never much of a crafts and hobbies man. However, a couple of years ago I took early retirement from my job in the oil industry. I was really looking forward having some time to relax but when the day came, I realised that I had nothing to do. My wife suggested that I join a local craft group. The guys who run the group are real experts and they taught me some top tips so I decided to start a blog to pass them on to others who are interested in this topic.

How Wooden Toys Help Children with Educational Development

According to research, about 2.6 million Australians buy toys in a four week period, which has led to high competition in the toy industry, forcing companies to keep innovating. Some modern toys feature intricately designed plastic pieces with bells and whistles. While such toys play a role in a child's development, most of the gadgets focus on entertainment as opposed to education. However, wooden toys offer a lot more, particularly regarding education. This article highlights ways that wooden toys promote your child's educational development.

Less Distraction -- The key to learning anything new, for both children and adults, is staying focused on the task. This is particularly essential for children because their brains are still developing. However, intricately designed plastic toys equipped with different sounds, such as sirens, whistles or bells, can distract a child. This is especially the case in an environment where kids have unique toys, such as childcare centres. With wooden toys, a child generates the sound, allowing them to be in control, not the toys. Moreover, since wooden toys are less distracting, children can think through different scenarios, which is vital for cognitive development.

Encourages Problem Solving -- Problem-solving skills are not the easiest to teach to children, especially if you do not have the right resources. Even the most basic wooden toys can help children develop problem-solving skills from a very young age. For instance, the toys can be used to create logic puzzles, building blocks or models for advancing math and science concepts. Furthermore, wooden toys come in basic shapes and sizes, which means that children have to figure out how the pieces fit into specific scenarios. A good example is a shape-sorter, which requires a child to match blocks of particular shapes and sizes to relevant slots. The wooden toys encourage kids to think logically to complete the puzzle. This is different from modern plastic toys, which are pre-made and accompanied by instructional sets.

Encourages Creativity -- Learning should not be bland; otherwise, children will grow without any sense of creativity. Plastic toys are generally one-dimensional compared to wooden toys. For instance, plastic toys are smooth and do not have a unique smell. On the other hand, wooden toys come in different textures, and their distinctive smell stimulates a child's senses. This enhances children's ability to think for themselves and make sense of their environment. For instance, kids can use the same wooden toy blocks in different scenarios, such as constructing houses, trees, pet houses and furniture.
